“At age three, these horses will have been exposed to more than most horses by age 20!”

--industry publication The Horse

The National Police Horse Academy is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization bringing together groups with diverse backgrounds to work toward the common goal of breeding, raising, and training horses suitable for use in mounted law enforcement units.

The National Police Horse Academy was founded for the purpose of:

  • Providing uniformly and properly trained horses for law enforcement units across the country;

  • Providing training for officers and horses in mounted law enforcement units;

  • Providing college equine programs with young horses to train and a way to earn funds for their programs through the sale of these horses;

  • Providing training and jobs for horses bred by the North American Equine Ranching Information Council (NAERIC), an official provider of horses for NPHA.

Here’s How It Works:

Lexington Mounted Police UnitWeanlings of various breeds and crosses will be provided at no cost to NPHA partner colleges with equine programs across the country. Those schools will care for and train the horses for up to three years, following a standardized curriculum designed to desensitize these horses for use in law enforcement. Each fall, the NPHA will hold a competition and judging for NPHA-trained horses, followed by a public auction. At the time of sale of each horse, the breeder will receive a set deferred payment, the NPHA will receive 10%, and the equine program will receive the balance of the funds.

Future phases of NPHA will develop training programs for horses/officers already in law enforcement units at its headquarters at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky., and at other locations across North America. Another phase will create a training program for officers/cadets who will be entering a mounted unit, or for advanced equitation/mounted police training for officers already in law enforcement units.

Parelli Natural Horse•Man•Ship will be the official recommended training method used for NPHA horses.

All horses involved in the NPHA training program will be microchipped and nominated into the NAERIC Incentive Program. This program matches dollar-for-dollar monies that are awarded throughpurses won at designated competitions, through breeders’ trust funds, and by other incentive programs. Half-Thoroughbred horses will be registered in the Sport Horse Association operated by USA Equestrian.

While all horses are trained toward the goal of having them join a mounted law enforcement unit, these horses will be offered at public auction in their 3-year-old year at the Kentucky Horse Park.
